Dublin To Boston Bay
Wednesday, April 26th 2017

My occasional musical partner-in-crime Alan Kavanagh recently asked if I knew anyone who might be able to do a simple animated video for a demo of his song “Dublin To Boston Bay.” I do, but they’re all much too busy thanks to Ireland’s booming animation industry. So I came up with a basic story concept inspired by his lyrics, then broke out the pencils…

This was made by scanning the drawings into Photoshop for a little tidying-up, then using iMovie to synch them to the appropriate lyrics and to add the Ken Burns zooms and pans.

One For The Road

World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims logoI opened my eyes. The first thing I saw was a little glob of blood and skin from my busted open right eyebrow go splat against the passenger window. For some reason, I thought this was hilarious.

Our car was on its side in the ditch. Bare brown branches, hedging and undergrowth pressed up against the passenger window. I couldn’t tell if we were at the bottom of the ditch or if the only thing preventing us from dropping all the way were these suddenly very delicate looking twigs that scratched off the glass as I started to move.

I was sort of lying on my left side, the seatbelt holding me in my seat and keeping my full weight off the passenger door. I hesitantly waggled my toes and was relieved when they moved. My right arm felt weird. I gingerly touched at the strange ache halfway between the shoulder and elbow. Even through the bulky coat I had on, I could feel that there was something sticking out that shouldn’t have been sticking out.

What used to be the windscreen was now a billion sugar cubey pieces of glass dusting the inside of the car and everything else. I felt a strange grittiness in my mouth and swallowed without thinking. Luckily it wasn’t a piece of the glass, just a couple of chips off my front teeth.

Just Saying
Saturday, December 29th 2012

It’s a grand little country when it isn’t raining, and to tell the truth it really doesn’t rain as much as we let on, and sure we’re well used to it by now anyway and it’s never stopped us from having our fun.

So maybe it’s not the wet weeks, the wet socks, the wet jeans, wet funerals and wet streets you get sick of. Maybe your idea of “grand” is just a little different. And that doesn’t make you wrong or right, or make you a better person, it’s just a fact of life.

December Eve
Thursday, December 15th 2011

“December Eve” is a Christmas song written and recorded by Shade of Light (Clare Meleady and Fiona Gill). They’ve released the song on CD and Download in aid of two Cystic Fibrosis charities, The Tracie Lawlor Trust and Life Matters 4 CF.

I’ve known Clare for many years through being involved with the Salt & Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band. Normally around this time of year, the Salt and Pepper band would be staging a fundraising concert for one of the charities we supported, but since our band leader passed away in 2009, it’s become pretty much impossible to organize any gigs. So I was really delighted when Clare asked me to play guitar for some of the promotional shows she and Fiona were holding to promote the song.

The song is selling well and is on the way to making a bucketload of money for the two charities. Limited copies are available for purchase from Tower Records and selected HMV stores. You can also download it from iTunes.

It’s a great song, and it’s for a great cause. We’re hoping to go busking in Dublin city centre this Sunday, 18th December, so if you happen to see us, please buy a CD (or two or three).
