The First Rule

A disaffected, disillusioned young man becomes part of an underground terrorist organisation that preaches self-destruction as the means to fight against the ideals of Western society, ultimately culminating in a bombing campaign that destroys several buildings.

Sound familiar? That’s right. It’s the plot to Fight Club.

But with a few little tweaks it becomes a sort of base narrative for 21st century expressions of male rage that range from school shooters to gamergaters to ISIS.

Gone Dark

Sad news about the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield, which has been wound down following a court order resulting from a dispute with their landlord over unpaid rent.

I was studying for my Masters in Film & Television when the cinema was under construction, and myself and three other students were lucky enough to be allowed in a week before opening night to have a look around and to do some shooting for a short documentary project. (And we were there with the cameras again on opening night too; you can view the resulting video on the Multimedia page.)
